With America celebrating its 250th birthday, there’s no better place to explore the nation’s story than Fredericksburg, Virginia. Located halfway between Washington, D.C., and Richmond, this charming city has been part of America’s story since the beginning—and continues to write new chapters today.
With nearly 300 years of history, a thriving arts scene, vibrant dining, and scenic outdoor adventures, Fredericksburg invites visitors to step into the past while enjoying a lively and welcoming present.
History Comes to Life
Fredericksburg is deeply connected to America’s founding story. Across the Rappahannock River at George Washington’s Ferry Farm, visitors can explore the boyhood home of the nation’s first president and learn about the experiences that shaped him.
Downtown, the Washington family legacy continues at Historic Kenmore, the elegant home of Washington’s sister Betty, as well as the Mary Washington House (mother’s house) and Rising Sun Tavern, which offer a glimpse into everyday life in the 18th century.
Another Founding Father, James Monroe, once practiced law in Fredericksburg. Today, his former office is home to the James Monroe Museum, where visitors can explore the life and legacy of America’s fifth president.
Fredericksburg’s history stretches far beyond the colonial era. The city is also home to Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, where visitors can walk the grounds of four major Civil War battlefields.
More recently, Fredericksburg unveiled “Freedom: A Work in Progress —Fredericksburg’s Civil Rights Trail,” now recognized as part of the U.S. Civil Rights Trail. This self-guided experience highlights pivotal sites from 1865 through today, honoring Black entrepreneurs, educators, and leaders who helped shape the city while recognizing civil rights activism through the present day.
Savor Every Bite
Fredericksburg’s culinary scene blends local flavor with creative flair. One stop along the Civil Rights Trail is the former home of John Washington, now home to Foode, one of the city’s most beloved restaurants. Led by Chef Joy Crump—a Top Chef competitor and James Beard Award semifinalist—Foode serves Southern classics with a modern twist using fresh, seasonal ingredients.
Historic eateries like Sunken Well Tavern offer comfort food favorites, while a trip to Fredericksburg isn’t complete without a stop at Carl’s Frozen Custard, a beloved local institution serving sweet treats since 1947.
Craft beverage enthusiasts can explore the Fredericksburg Area Beer Trail, featuring stops at Strangeways Brewing and The Port Oysteria & Brewery, along with other local favorites throughout the region. Wine lovers can enjoy curated tastings and small plates at Curio Wine Bar & Tasting Room, located along historic William Street in downtown Fredericksburg.
Adventure Awaits
Sports fans can also catch a Fredericksburg Nationals baseball game at Virginia Credit Union Stadium, where the Washington Nationals’ minor league affiliate delivers high-energy baseball and a fun, family-friendly atmosphere throughout the season.
Explore the Outdoors
Fredericksburg’s landscapes are as rich in history as its buildings. Visitors can walk the scenic Rappahannock River Heritage Trail, enjoy sweeping views from the Chatham Bridge pedestrian overlook, paddle at Mott Run Reservoir, or hike the Virginia Central Railway Trail.
Shop & Stroll
Downtown Fredericksburg is one of Virginia’s most charming and walkable shopping districts. Along historic Caroline Street, visitors will discover an eclectic mix of boutiques, antique shops, art galleries, and locally owned specialty stores.
Immerse Yourself in the Arts
Fredericksburg’s creative spirit is on full display at LibertyTown Arts Workshop, home to more than 50 working artists. Visitors can explore galleries, meet artists in their studios, and find one-of-a-kind pieces ranging from pottery and jewelry to paintings and sculpture.
